Free Cheetos & Streaming Hometown News

Free Cheetos & Streaming Hometown News

Here I am at Joey’s nerd meeting. I have a cup of….I totally forget what it’s called. Sierra Mist. I ate some candy and I used to have a whole big cup of Cheetos but Joey gave them to Ryan. Everyone else is watching Ryan’s presentation of something and I not paying attention at all.

I know, I know, I know.

The two reasons I came were:

  1. To eat free Cheetos
  2. To stream the news from back home

So I ate the Cheetos, now I am streaming the news. It is blowing me away. Hopefully the evil Cedar River will crest tomorrow and get out of my daddy’s office because no one invited it in the first place, it just waltzed in and made itself right at home. Jerk. It’s not even going to pick up after itself, neithers. I’d go home and help if I could.

Tonight I’m getting free Cheetos. I’m going with Joey to his nerd meeting up in Addison, so that should be exciting. The good news is that I should have WiFi and hopefully be able to stream news from back home. The flooding in Cedar Rapids is tons worse than they were expecting and it has kind of distracted me all day long.

More Pictures From Back Home

My sneaky and minorly evil younger brother Andrew just emailed me a whole bunch of pictures. I already knew he was sneaky and minorly evil, but clearly he is worse than I suspected because somehow he got a bunch of pictures of the river up close that I didn’t think he was supposed to be allowed to get.

Anyway, for your edification, The Flood of 2008 part 2.

This here’s the building my Pops works in. If Brother was a part of putting up those sandbags, they’ll probably not only keep out the water, but actually repel it. He’s an enginerd after all.

The Paramount Theatre looks like it’s in a war zone. And I think they just remodeled in there, too…so this could be a mess if it had 2 feet of water standing inside…it’s such a pretty building.

This one’s real stealth on Brother’s part. Seems like he and Pops were in cahoots on this one because it appears to be taken from 380 and you’re not supposed to stop on 380 and take pictures, but clearly they drove slowly and one of them hung out the window to snap this picture.

A street beginning to flood in the downtown area. Maybe 2nd Avenue?

The water didn’t even get this high in ’93…it’s about to swamp the bridge, I cannot believe it! And Brother is SO lucky for getting this close. (Would have made for an excellent game of Pooh Sticks, don’t you agree Brother?)

More high water. He probably wasn’t supposed to be anywhere around here.

Dad said the National Guard is coming in at 2:00 today, so that should make things more interesting. Probably keep bad sorts (like my family, probably) from coming downtown and taking pictures.

The rains came down and the floods came up…

The rains came down and the floods came up…

Back in 1993 I was 11 and Iowa saw some of the worst flooding since 1929. Everybody still refers to ’93 whenever it rains a lot or the rivers start to rise.

Every time I’ve called home this summer, Pops has said “Well, it’s raining” and mentioned how poor Randy can’t get his crops in, or how there’s water standing in so and so’s soybean field. Real dramatic stuff, and particularly terrible for the farmers.

Well, the last few days have been especially riveting. Iowa City, where I’d really like to live someday, has been on alert the past few days because their resevoir was about to go over its spillway, thus out of the control of the Corps of Engineers. It topped the res last night and who knows how high the water will go.

So far, flood levels are above ’93.

As far as Cedar Rapids? Well, it’s not pretty there neithers, folks. At least this is what Brother tells me, and he’s fairly accurate. He and Laura took these pictures of the Cedar River last night before the cops shut down the area around the river and made all the gawkers go home.

I’m pretty sure this here building is Cargill or something. Anyways, it’s down by the river. Pretty floody looking.

This is probably the 2nd Avenue Bridge. I can’t remember seeing the water that high since, well, ’93.

And that’s May’s Island. (Nice work on the sun in the background, there, Brother. 5+)

This morning, Mom and Pops went down to their office, which is a few blocks off the river, to grab their computers to take home and get everything up off the floor. The hope is that only a few inches of water will reach that far past the river banks but…well, it’s really anyone’s guess.

The sewer downtown got turned off last night or something, so Pops was telling me that there are port-o-johns set up in front of the Alliant building. (Gross. I hope somebody gets those out before they get in the floodwaters!)

Andrew and I have been discussing Mom and Pops’ progress all day. Things like:

Jenna: hate to be the bearer of bad news, but did you look at the RADAR lately?
Andrew: yah i’m watching that. not very cool

Jenna: seems real end of the world

And

Andrew: i just got ahold of dad
he was slightly jovial
Jenna: woah, great!
Andrew: but then he had to go and said he’d call me back
Jenna: of course
he probalby won’t though
Andrew: he said the police just came by and said they should leave because the police were going to “lose control of the downtown”
whatever that means
Jenna: woah
Andrew: probably too many sight seers and there’s going to be a riot
Jenna: that’s real strange
hopefully Pops’ office stays safe
renegade kirkwood students and the like
Andrew: you never know

(He’s making me put this on because otherwise I will violate copyright infringement laws:

So he and I pretty much discussed all morning about how it’s panda-monium downtown and how Pops will probably get swept away with the flood waters. (The Police came by again and said they’re going to shut off the power so he’d better get out of there. Who knows if he actually complied.) Oh, and there’s apparently no rioters, just no sewer or power services. But we thought it sounded more dramatic with rioters.

So that’s that. The rain started at 11:30 and the storm cell looks huge. Could be a couple days before the crest comes, so hopefully Downtown Cedar Rapids is still there when the waters recede.
